This paper investigates the frequency response of load modulation networks for asymmetric Doherty power amplifiers (ADPA) with an output back-off power level larger than 6 dB and a power ratio of peak to main amplifier (N − 1) larger than 1. The influence of the main path impedance transformer (IT) on the Doherty impedances at main and peak path as well as on the ADPA's efficiency is analyzed. Scaling of the main IT's characteristic impedance via ξ indicates a maximum broadband matching for an input voltage Vin of ξ · Vin,max. By weighting the frequency- and ξ-dependent efficiency curves using a probability density function (PDF), an optimum is obtained for ξ = 1/N. To verify the theory, three ADPAs with different ξ-scaled ITs are designed, measured, and compared. For the design at 3.6 GHz, a gallium nitride (GaN) transistor is used. By means of the intrinsic node matching technique, matching at the current source plane is obtained. In laboratory measurements, the ADPA with ξ = 1/N achieves a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 63% at 42 dBm output power and a PDF-weighted average PAE of 38.8% within 400 MHz bandwidth for 8 dB peak-to-average power ratio. Comparison with similar state-of-the-art ADPAs in GaN technology shows highest PAE and operation power gain GP for center frequencies larger than 3.0 GHz.

A connection between microscopic structure and macroscopic properties is expected for almost all material systems. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy is a technique offering insight into the atomic structure, but the analysis of large image series can be time consuming. The present work describes a method to automatically estimate the atomic structure in two-dimensional materials. As an example graphene is chosen, in which the positions of the carbon atoms are reconstructed. Lattice parameters are extracted in the frequency domain and an initial atom positioning is estimated. Next, a plausible neighborhood structure is estimated. Finally, atom positions are adjusted by simulation of a Markov random field model, integrating image evidence and the strong geometric prior. A pristine sample with high regularity and a sample with an induced hole are analyzed. False discovery rate-controlled large-scale simultaneous hypothesis testing is used as a statistical framework for interpretation of results. The first sample yields, as expected, a homogeneous distribution of carbon–carbon (C–C) bond lengths. The second sample exhibits regions of shorter C–C bond lengths with a preferred orientation, suggesting either strain in the structure or a buckling of the graphene sheet. The precision of the method is demonstrated on simulated model structures and by its application to multiple exposures of the two graphene samples.

Summary
As the British Royal Air Force stepped up their bombing attacks on the capital of the German Reich as part of the “Battle of Berlin” campaign, the General Administration of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft, KWS) became increasingly concerned about the safety of the staff in their research institutes in Berlin-Dahlem. After tough negotiations with the authorities, the KWS property department finally gained permission to convert the cellar of the Harnack House, the society's main meeting place and lecture hall and, as such, the representative heart of the KWS, into a bunker. As manpower was scarce, the General Administration was obviously glad when in early March 1944 a member of staff of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (KWI) for Physical Chemistry negotiated the placement of “further assistant workers… from a concentration camp.” Although it is not recorded whether concentration camp prisoners actually worked on the Harnack House, it speaks for itself that their forced labor on this symbolic place, so central to the corporate identity of the KWS, was even considered.
The subject of forced labor has not been dealt with, even peripherally, in most publications on the history of the KWS. The same is true of most publications on the history of the individual institutes. For this reason, this chapter will look into the extent of forced labor in the research institutions of the KWS.

To investigate a possible physical association between the Southern Coalsack and the Chamaeleon-Musca (SCCM) dark clouds we have obtained uubyβ photometry for 1017 stars covering the connecting area: 308° ≥ l ≥ 294° and –20° ≤ b ≤ 5°. Analysis of the various colour excess E(b – y) vs. distance diagrams has indicated the presence of a local low absorption volume limited at 150 ± 30 pc from the Sun by an extended interstellar dust sheet-like feature, that is followed by a region where almost no additional reddening is measured for the next 350 pc. Combined with other data on the local ISM the existence of the dust sheet at an identical distance of the SCCM dark clouds have suggested that these clouds could be higher density regions associated to the diffuse lane of dust of the Local-Loop I bubbles’ interface.

Summary
Introduction
Over the last few years we have developed machine algorithms for detection and discrimination of liver disease from diagnostic ultrasound scans of the liver (Wagner, Insana & Brown, 1986; Insana et al., 1986a; Insana et al, 1986b; Wagner, Insana & Brown, 1987). Several diffuse disease conditions are manifested through very subtle changes in the texture of the image. In these cases the machine algorithms significantly outperform expert clinical readers of the images (Garra et al., 1989). The discrimination of textures by the machine depends principally on an analysis and partitioning of second-order statistical features such as the autocorrelation and power spectral estimators. This finding has prompted us to investigate whether the human visual system might be more limited in its performance of such second-order tasks than it is for the wide range of first-order tasks where it scores so well.
At the beginning of this decade we learned how to use the words ‘well or good’ and ‘poorly or bad’ in the context of visual performance. We enjoyed a very fruitful collaboration with Horace Barlow through Arthur Burgess who split his sabbatical at that time between Horace Barlow's lab and ours (Burgess, Wagner, Jennings & Barlow, 1981; Burgess, Jennings & Wagner, 1982). From this collaboration we learned how instructive it is to compare the performance of the human visual system with that of the ideal observer from statistical decision theory. The latter introduces no fluctuations or sources of error beyond those inherent to the data that conveys the scene or image.
